FAQ

 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?

A: During the first 40-45 minutes, the Mad Scientist will engage children with amazing science demonstrations that are conducted with the help of your birthday child and guests. Some examples of experiments that may be included are: fitting a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space, melting Styrofoam and blowing out a candle with a vortex! During the final 10-15 minutes of the party, children (ages 5 and older) will make slime or silly putty (age dependent) to take home. Add-on activities will add approximately 15-20 minutes onto the 60 minute show.

Q: For what ages are your parties appropriate?

A: Our parties are appropriate for children turning 6 to 12 years of age. Everyone is welcome to watch the show; we ask that only children ages 5 and older make the slime take-home. We determine the number of attendees based on the number of children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Q: How far in advance do I need to book my party?

A: Our party schedule fills up quickly. We suggest you book well in advance to get the date and time you want. Generally, at least 3 weeks in advance is recommended. Saturday at 2:00 pm is our most popular day and time. Please note: Your party is not booked until you’ve received a confirmation via email. Parties booked less than a week before the party date, are required to pay by credit card prior to the party.

Q: What time can I have my party?

A: On Saturdays and Sundays we have set party times of 11:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Parties can be scheduled any day of the week. All dates and times are subject to availability.

Q: Do I have to host my party at my house?

A: Nope! We’ve done parties for lots of families who like to host their party at a local town hall, church, or Boys & Girls Club. We just ask that you notify us of your party location at the time of booking. Changing your party location after confirming your booking could result in an additional fee or cancellation depending upon new location.

Q: Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?

A: No. All we need is an estimate of the number of children you expect to attend. We ask that you plan for the largest number of children expected. We will check in with you the Monday/Tuesday prior to your party date for your final guest count. We ask that you only include the children who will be making the slime take-home (children ages 5 and older) in your final guest count.

Q: Do you have any themed parties?

A: All our themes revolve around science. If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used. We cannot make any guarantees.

Q: When will the Mad Scientist arrive?

A: The Mad Scientist will arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled show start to set up. He/she will be ready to start the show at the time you booked. It is best to start your party at least 30 minutes before your Mad Science show is scheduled to start, to ensure the Mad Scientist is able to start on time.

Q: What kind of space is needed?

A: We ask that you have enough space for the Mad Scientist and for your guests to be comfortable as well. We prefer to have the children sit on the ground/floor so that everyone may easily see and assist throughout the show.

Q: Will I have to provide the Mad Scientist with anything?

A: We ask that you provide the Mad Scientist with a table (card-sized or larger) placed near an outlet. We may also need access to water.

Q: Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?

A: The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and continue until our portion of the entertainment is finished. We will not be able to stop for any other activities (ex. food or cake). We ask that you please plan accordingly.

Q: Can your parties be done outside?

A: Our parties are best presented indoors. We can present them outside if there is no wind or rain.  However if there is a chance of inclement weather, they must be presented inside. Some party add-ons MUST be presented indoors.

Q: Can I postpone/cancel my party due to inclement weather?

A: If you decide to postpone or cancel your party due to inclement weather, we just ask that you notify us as soon as possible (no less than 3 hours prior to the party please). You will not owe us any money. We would be happy to reschedule for another date.

Q: When is payment due?

A: Payment in full is due on the party day. We do not require a deposit at this time. Cash and checks are accepted on the party day. Credit card payments must be processed over the phone at least one business day prior to the party day. We currently accept MasterCard and Visa.

Q: What is your policy on tipping?

A.    Gratuities are allowed. They are optional of course, but if you choose to give a tip, we ask that you make it separate from the payment so it goes directly to the Mad Scientist.
